Community Colleges

California is particularly fortunate in having many excellent state-supported, tuition-free community colleges. To be eligible for admission to the community college, a student must be 18 years of age or, a high school graduate who can show that he/she can profit from a community college education. At the community college, students who plan to transfer as juniors to a four-year college will take regular, lower division college work, which prepares them for entrance in the junior year to a California State University (CSU), University of California (UC) or a private college without loss of standing or credits. Taking a few additional classes in a major area can qualify the student to earn an Associate of Arts Degree (AA Degree), as well as eligibility for transfer.

For, students who do not plan on four years of college, the community college offers two-year courses in a variety of vocational fields. These programs lead to the Associate or Science Degree (AS Degree), which is awarded for completion of an outlined two-year course. Students who successfully complete one of these two-year vocational programs will be qualified for a job in that field. Students who want to take courses to better their job skills may also do so with certain classes offered.

The cost of a community college will include a service fee and the price of books. This amount will vary with different courses, but in general, students can attend the community college for a very small expenditure.

  •  Transportation & personal expenses $800
  •  Health fee $17
These costs may be taken care of by on campus jobs or grants such as the Cal Grant or small scholarships. You must have at least a 2.0 gpa overall in high school to qualify for a Cal Grant. Go to the financial aid workshops we offer at SHS in the Fall and Spring semesters.

The advantages of a community college include the following:
  •  A wide variety of vocational courses, as well as college transfer
  •  Not necessary to leave home to attend college
  •  The relatively low cost.

The Community College is a good choice for you if:
  •  You wish to attend a college that will train you in two years for a career/vocation
  •  You plan on four years of college, but for financial or other reasons, you prefer to stay at home for the first two years
  •  You want to attend a four-year college, but your grades and/or subjects do not qualify you for admission without further preparation.
  • Students in the Rowland Unified School District generally attend Mount San Antonio (MSAC).
